At it’s core, “folklore” is character driven, she expresses the complex emotions like love, loss, nostalgia, separation, friendship etc. She sings about a teenage love triangle between Betty, James and Augustin. In the song “cardigan”, she wrote it from Betty’s perspective, a teenage girl feeling loved and comforted for the first time where in the song “Betty”, written from James’s perspective, she mentions James confronting cheating on Betty with the girl Augustin and regretting it, blaming it on the youth. The 8th track of the album “August”, which is also the 8th month in a year, finally, she sings from the perspective of Augustin, a summer love affair that ultimately fades away. The first 10th track-“illicit affairs” she describes the affair between James and Augustin. The first track-“the 1”, she sings about a reminiscing feeling about the past. The seventh track-“Seven” she sings about a childhood friend having an abusive father and not-being able to help. Each-track feels like a new short story having it’s own context yet connected to one invisible string.
“Folklore marked a turning point in her career not only musically but also in terms of her reputation as an artist. The album’s departure from mainstream pop sound showcased her willingness to experiment and evolve, garnering praises from critics and expanding her fanbase.
